The mission of the Stem Cell Core Facility at Northwestern is to enable scientists at Feinberg Schoolf of Medicine and Northwestern University to conduct research using human embryonic (ESCand induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs). Patient-specific iPSCs offer unprecedented opportunities to study human developmental processes and disease, using human stem cell-derived somatic cells under each person’s unique genetic constellation. These technologies have quickly become quintessential for various aspects of translational research across the fields of neurobiology, physiology, nanoengineering, regenerative medicine, pharmacology and cancer. The facility offers six essential services: (A) technical support in basic culturing techniques of human ESCs and iPSCs, including focused training sessions; (B) providing lab space and equipment for NWU researchers that want to engage stem cell projects; (C) generating iPSCs from patients; (D) offering general consulting and support for iPSC-based disease modeling projects; (E) a drop off service for peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) isolation and storage for eventual iPSCs reprogramming, and (F) CRISPR/Cas9 gene editing for precise manipulation of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) to either introduce or repair a mutation in pluripotent stem cells.
