The Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute (WTSI) is a large research institute in Cambridgeshire, UK. The Institute operates a number of central core facilities to facilitate its research program, one of which is the Cellular Generation and Phenotyping (CGaP) core facility that provides centralised cell-biology services. Broadly, CGaP services can be divided into two distinct areas, the derivation and growth of cells (usually iPS) and the subsequent characterisation of cells both in terms of their cell surface markers and their performance in cell-based bioassays. The group are currently engaged in projects to derive and bank stem cells from skin biopsies and blood samples from specific disease cohorts as well as control subjects. In addition the group are also running projects in which iPS cells are differentiated to committed linages such as macrophage and megakaryocyte.
